Let’s be honest, finding love in this economy is an extreme sport. Everybody’s stressed, tired, dodging responsibilities, or ghosting someone else. So when your friend finally drags you to that event, and your eyes meet someone across the room who makes your heart do backflips, what do you do?
You lock in, soldier! You don’t fumble the bag. Because in this dating market, the bag is rare, and people are getting married out of panic.
Here’s how to meet someone at an event (and hopefully make them the love of your life):
1. Eye Contact

They say the eyes are the window to the soul. In Nigeria, they’re also the softest way to shoot your shot. You lock eyes once, okay. You lock eyes twice, hmm…. Three times? Just go and greet your in-laws.
But don’t be weird about it. If they look away and never look back again, that’s God’s way of telling you to focus on your goals, not this person.

2. Vibes Don’t Lie

You don’t need to start a TED Talk. A little small talk, a smile that says “I have toothpaste at home,” and a compliment that doesn’t sound like it came from a WhatsApp broadcast is enough.
Vibes are important. If you approach someone and they start looking around for their friends, the nearest exit, or a fake phone call; abort mission.
3. Know When To Ask for Their Instagram.

You’ve made them laugh, they said your outfit is nice, and now you’re thinking of sending them a love letter via pigeon. Please don’t.
Ask. For. Their. Instagram.
Or Twitter. Or TikTok. Or their Fusion username (extra points for that).
Do not wait until the end of the night when they’re halfway out the door, and you’re running behind them like a character from a Nollywood airport scene. That’s how you lose your blessing.
4. Dress Like You’re Going to Be Photographed

You never know where your next boo is lurking; could be the food stand, the bathroom line, or beside the DJ booth. If you’re looking to really meet someone at an event, your packaging needs to be in check.
- Iron your clothes.
- Moisturize your lips.
- Stop wearing socks with holes in them.
- Spray perfume. Not insecticide.
You can’t be looking like “try again next week” and expecting “wife/husband material” to notice you. Respect yourself.

5. Read the Room, Please

Not every smile is a green light. Not every “nice shoes” is an invitation to trauma-dump your heartbreak from 2021. Read. The. Room.
If they give you short replies, politely excuse themselves, or suddenly remember a Zoom call at 9:30PM on a Saturday night, carry your fine self and go.
Nobody wants to fall in love with someone who can’t take a hint.
