What is it like to be a Lastborn? Most people (those who are not lastborns) think it’s all bliss and roses. That’s not entirely true. Sometimes, it’s bliss especially when you run to hide behind your parents for protection after offending your older sibling. Other times, it’s hell like when you’re left alone with your older siblings and they get the chance to bully you for all the times they couldn’t deal with you.

In all of this, the constant factor is that you’re the baby of the house and nobody, not even furious older siblings, can change that.

If you’re a lastborn, then you can relate to some if not all of the 10 things listed below.

Let’s get into it.

You have a PhD in washing plates

As the last born, the most dreaded chore is left for you. You’re automatically the designated dishwasher in your home; regardless of your gender. Infact, you do it so much that it is worth a spot in your CV. If someone else does the cooking, you have to do the washing and If you did the cooking, you will also do the washing. Even if you neither cooked nor ate the food that was served, you will still be the one to do the washing. That’s just how it goes. Believe me, all those memes that show lastborns after washing one spoon is all propaganda against the Lastborns Community.

Your parents are more likely to overlook your offences

Mom and Dad are not as strict as they used to be. You tend to get away with things they would have crucified your older siblings for and the older siblings find this very infuriating. Well, it’s not your fault, is it? You’re not the one that asked them to come first, are you? It’s their own cup of agbo.

The annoying part of this is that the older siblings will now try to become disciplinarians. Who asked them? Are they your parents?

The day you slip up, everybody becomes judge and jury

This is expounding on the previous point. When your parents are scolding your older siblings, you dare not put your mouth. But the day your parents are scolding you, your older siblings will come from nowhere and be including their opinion. Who exactly do they think they are?

Sometimes, you may be the last to leave your parents house

Your siblings grow and begin to become independent and leave the house. Sometimes, you get to stay with your parents into their old age before you leave. This only helps to solidify the already solid bond you have with them.

Errand boy/girl is your middle name

At family gatherings, your name is on everyone’s mouth. Osakpolor, go and do this. Osakpolor, go and do that. From your grandmother to your aunt’s husband to your cousin’s older brother, they will call you to send you all sorts of messages. The good side to it is that at the end of it, you’ll get some change squeezed into your palm for being very handy. (God help you if you have stingy relatives sha.)

You get the opportunity to visit your siblings in their various houses when you’ve all grown.

If they’re scattered across different states, you’ll get to travel to different places to see them. Sometimes, you could stay for a weekend. In most cases, you could stay months. And while you stay with them, who takes care of the expenses? Them, of course!  Yours is to relass and be taken kiaruf! You’ll still wash plates sha! No escape! But then again, you might get a little something squeezed into your hand when you’re leaving their houses.

You can open a boutique with all the hand-me-downs you get from your older siblings

Most times, lastborns might get a hand-me-down that was already handed down from the oldest sibling to the next sibling before it gets to you. Why should your parents buy you clothes when your siblings could just give you their old clothes that are still good whether you like them or not?

Your older siblings are your personal POS

Why have a sugar daddy/mummy when you can be a last born and have your older siblings fund your lifestyle? You’re the baby of the house and automatically have the free pass to bill anybody billable. You can bill with impunity and if you play your cards right, you will flex!

Your older siblings may face certain situations which you wouldn’t

For example, your older siblings all went to day school but you attend a boarding school. Or your older siblings attended higher education in Nigeria and when it’s your turn you get to study abroad. Sometimes, it can be nice. Other times, it might not be in your favour. It is what it is.

You have snitched on your older siblings at least once

lastborns

This is revenge for all the times they gave their unsolicited opinion when mummy and daddy were scolding you. Now, the tables have turned. You hold the power over them and depending on how they treat you, you might decide to keep quiet or go ahead and snitch on them to get them in trouble.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not easy to be a Lastborn. If you know any Lastborns, please share this article with them and also squeeze 10 million naira into their palms.
