A wise man once said: “Fellow Nigerians, prepare for hard times!” Hard times are here again and they don’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Since bills have decided to keep shooting up without commensurate increase in pay, it is pertinent that we find smart ways to cut our coats according to our clothes(or how do they say it?).
All I’m trying to say is that we need to reduce our expenditure as much as possible and embrace a savings culture so that your savings can save you on rainy days. A great way to cut down on clothing expenses is to go thrift shopping, clean them up and step out in grand style. Believe you me, no one will be able to tell the difference except you let them in on our little secret and like they say at thrift markets; ”Na mumu dey go boutique.” For the sake of those that would like to try this but don’t have a clue where these markets are, here you go:
Katangua (Super) Market
This is the largest thrift market in Lagos. Situated around Abule Egba/Iyana Ipaja axis, Katangua (aka bend down select) market is a bustling hub of sales activities where you’ll discover authentic secondhand stuff; underwear, clothing, kitchen utensils, or general household items, at jaw-dropping prices. Shopping for your little ones, your loved ones or yourself? Katangua is the place.
To score the best deals, mark your calendar for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. These are the days when fresh consignments arrive, with an array of fairly used and sometimes brand new treasures. Timing your visit to coincide with these days would help you maximize the experience. Also, due to the amount of activity happening here and passionate traders trying to get your attention by any means possible, you might get overwhelmed. So, I strongly recommend that you go with a friend who’s familiar with the terrain.
The heaps of clothing at Katangua come in different grades. Each grade has a corresponding price range. So, whether you’re seeking budget-friendly options or willing to splurge a bit, there’s something for everyone. Katangua isn’t just a market; it’s an experience.
Yaba Market
Yaba market is another place where you can get very authentic Okrika (first-grade used) clothes for as low as 1000. Even you will be amazed at the authenticity of the clothes. While Katangua market prices are cheaper than Yaba’s, Yaba offers items that aren’t as pricey as the ones you’ll find in Tejousho market, Unilag students can tell you what’s up.
All you need do is find your way to Yaba bus stop, ask for directions and the rest is history. You can tell you’ve arrived at the market when you start getting approached by sellers trying to persuade you to buy from them.
Balogun Market
Also popularly known as Eko market is the hub of textile and fabric in Lagos. The market is located in Lagos Island close to Marina. Teeming with high footfalls and trading activities, you surely can’t get enough of what the market offers. You can’t be too careful if you’re going to shop here because there are lots of people doing the same. You’ll see your favourite lace, wrappers and ready-made dresses on display there. All you just need to do is to confirm if it is the right fit for you, then you haggle prices for a bit ( I mean, what’s the essence of going to a big market if you don’t get to haggle prices 😉), then make payment and ensure to leave the market on time so you don’t get stranded(miss buses going in your direction).
Aswani Market
Aswani market is quite popular and is known for its long years of attending to customers’ needs in terms of clothing, fabric and accessories. Tuesdays are special days and you have to tighten your belt when you go there. There are bends down select as well as high-grade clothes. You can get your favourites at fair prices.
Computer Village
Everybody in Lagos knows this place, including people outside Lagos. It is known as the tech hub of Lagos where you can get most of your tech needs(mobile phones mostly)and household gadgets, whether fairly used or brand new. However, you can get thrift clothes here as well, especially in the evenings.
Online Thrift Stores
It’s a tush version of the regular Okrika market. It’s a “swipe and select” instead of “bend down and select “ market. The best thing about these online stores is that you don’t have to leave the convenience of your home or current location. The online vendors have gone through the trouble of doing market runs and getting the best of the best, dry cleaned and packaged them. All you have to do is swipe through their page and select what you want (swipe and select 😉).
I hear they have thrift markets in Badagry and Ojoo waterside areas too.
What’s more? We have an online thrift store on Fusion! Join the Alaba Online Community for amazing deals on kitchen appliances, household gadgets, clothes and everything in between.
